Coco Lee, a singer and actress originally from Hong Kong, passed away on Wednesday, as announced by her sisters on social media. Her successful career spanned several decades, encompassing numerous albums, movies, and television shows. According to her sisters, Coco had been battling depression for a few years and had attempted to take her own life on Sunday. Despite being hospitalized, she remained in a coma and ultimately passed away at the age of 48.

In their statement, her sisters highlighted the 30th anniversary of Coco’s singing career, during which she garnered international acclaim and impressed audiences with her exceptional live performances. They acknowledged her dedication to promoting Chinese singers in the global music scene and expressed their pride in her achievements. The family requested privacy during this time of mourning, while emphasizing that Coco’s impact would endure.

Coco Lee was born in Hong Kong and raised in the United States. She gained recognition after winning a singing contest during a visit to Hong Kong following high school. Throughout the 1990s, she achieved success in Asia with millions of album sales, releasing music in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Her R&B and hip-hop influenced style also garnered popularity in the United States, leading to her role as the Mandarin voice of Fa Mulan in Disney’s “Mulan” released in 1998.

However, it was her contribution to the 2000 film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” that propelled her to global fame. She performed the romantic ballad “A Love Before Time” in the movie, which went on to receive numerous awards and introduced renowned actresses like Michelle Yeoh to American audiences. Her performance of the song at the 2001 Oscars reached millions of viewers.

In recent years, She appeared on Chinese singing competition television shows such as “Infinity and Beyond” and “Singer.” Her last Instagram post, dated December 31, 2022, acknowledged the challenges of the year and encouraged her followers to remain positive and spread love.

Her last single, called “Tragic,” was released in February. In a post to her social media at the end of 2022, Ms. Lee acknowledged having had an “incredibly difficult year” but encouraged her followers to spread positivity and “be an influential figure to inspire people.”
